Language Arts Literacy (LAL)- Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking
All students will be immersed in Reading. The Reading curriculum is based on a balanced literacy program using a researched based textbook series supplemented by a variety of trade books and classroom libraries. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, referred to as junior scholars, scholars and senior scholars, respectively, use core and independent literature across the genres as the base of the reading program. All students participate in book club activities that include reading a minimum of thirty books a year. Writing development is based on best practices and involves process, fluency and technical accuracy. The writing process includes brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing, and develops the skills of effective writing. Students engage in public speaking activities that provide opportunities for the development of active listening and effective speaking for a variety of audiences.
Mathematics
The vision of the implementation of mathematics curriculum at UC TEAMS revolves around what takes place in and outside of the classroom, with an emphasis on the built environment. The classroom-learning environment is designed to stimulate student interest and enjoyment in their everyday experiences. Instructional activities support the NJCCCS and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and integrate technology. The vision is to challenge students to use mathematics in meaningful ways that develop through reasoning and problem solving skills. The researched based Chicago Math program is used as the base of the mathematics program and is supplemented by the Mathematical Achievement Problem Solving Initiative (MAPSI). MAPSI is designed to foster critical thinking and provide opportunities for students to engage in daily problem solving activities involving construction, architectural topics and historical building design with the integration of technology.
Science
Inquiry centered Science curriculum materials aligned with the NJCCCS and the National Science Education Standards (NSES) are used to provide students with opportunities to focus on concrete experiences with Earth, Physical and General science phenomena.
Science units of study enable students to investigate important science concepts in depth over a period of time and contribute to the development of scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills. Thematic teaching involves the integration of Mathematics and Technology with emphasis on the “built environment.”
Social Studies
Guided by the NJCCCS for Social Studies and the Language Arts Literacy standards, thematic units are used that integrate meaning into the curriculum. Teachers team and collaborate to design Social Studies themes for the K-2 cluster, the 3-5 cluster and the middle school/scholar cluster.
World Language
The study of world languages heightens students’ linguistic and cultural awareness. K-8 UC TEAMS students will engage in meaningful, motivating and age appropriate as well as cognitively challenging activities in the second language classes offered. Classes will be conducted weekly throughout the school year.
Physical Education, Art, Music and Electives for Scholars
Weekly, students receive instruction in Art, Music and Physical Education. Students in the first through eight grades participate in Physical Education classes twice a week. Junior scholars, scholars and senior scholars i.e. (students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade) enroll in elective courses each forty-five day cycle and receive technology assisted instruction centered on the built environment.
